IGP orders immediate restructuring of SARS
The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has ordered the immediate re-organization of Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad. The IGP has also ordered an immediate probe into the allegations against the squad.
In the new arrangement, a Commissioner of Police is now the overall head of the Federal Anti-Robbery Squad nationwide under the Department of Operations, Force Headquarters Abuja.
The Police Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Momoh disclosed in an interview with TVC News that the IGP wants Nigerians to report "past or present" maltreatment to the right quarters.
Jimoh said the IGP is concerned with public interest and the need to reposition SARS for more efficiency and effective service delivery to all Nigerians.
The IGP's decision is coming few days after some Nigerians launched a campaign against the operation of unit, calling for its outright sack. The group had through the hashtag #ENDSARS levelled weighty accusations of torture and extortion against the force.
